I enjoy doing critique for two groups of artists each month. My Dallas group meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month near Campbell Rd. and 75. My Arlington group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month near I-30 and Cooper Street. Each group has twelve full-time members and a list of alternate subs. We meet in the morning and have lunch together afterward. We all enjoy both the educational and social aspects of the groups.
I inherited the critique groups from Rob Erdle, who was a popular art professor at the University of North Texas. Although he passed away far too young, he established a wonderful critique tradition for us to enjoy and learn from. The groups have been around for over twenty years and we welcome serious, working artists in all media and at all levels from beginner to advanced ability.
Joining a critique group can be extremely helpful for your progress as an artist. I critique each artist for ten minutes. You may bring one or two paintings. You learn not only from my comments about your work but also from my comments and observations about the work of your collegues. When you are going to enter a juried show, have a gallery show, go in a new direction with your work, or just feel stuck, participating in a critique group can be extremely useful. It opens your mind to new, fresh ideas which you can apply to your work. I cannot count the number of times that someone has had an Aha moment during our critique sessions. A majority of my critique artists have made excellent progress in their work, been accepted into juried shows, and started winning awards. All of that is icing on the cake, but it encourages you to push yourself to make work at a higher, more challenging level.
If you are interested in joining one of my critique groups or for more information, call 214-340-6914 or e-mail me and I will pass the information on to the group coordinator. The critique fee is $25 each month. .
